Effect of organic and inorganic sources and graded levels of nitrogen on yield of betelvine (Piper betle L.).

Betelvine (Piper betle) was grown in the field for 3 successive seasons from 1988-91. N fertilizer was applied as neem [Azadirachta indica] cake, karanj [Pongamia pinnata] cake, neem cake + urea (ratio 1:1) or urea alone, at 100, 150 or 200 kg N/ha annually. Leaf yield (determined as the number of leaves/plot) increased with increasing N application rates with all the fertilizers. Averaged over the years, the largest yield (3827.78 kg/ha) and the highest net return (34 400 Rs/ha) were obtained with the application of 200 kg N/ha in the form of neem cake. However, leaf rotting after the harvest increased with increasing N levels, and was particularly high (15.75%) when urea was used as the N source.
