E. carotovora subsp. carotovora and E. carotovora subsp. atroseptica are important potato diseases in southern Chile. The main source of their dissemination is potato seed tubers. A survey during 1990-91 revealed that most of the seed lots examined were within the limits of tolerance imposed by the regulations on certification of the seed potato. Among the isolates identified from the infected seed tubers, E. c. subsp. atroseptica was the most common.
