The bulbs were lifted, dried in the sun for 3 days, in the shade for 30 days and the stalks trimmed to 1 cm. Two different treatments were then applied, viz. (1) bulbs were immersed in 1% sodium hypochlorite for 5 min, or (2) they were immersed in 400 p.p.m. garlic extract for 5 min. The control bulbs (3) were untreated. Treated bulbs were then packed in PVC film or in cloth bags and all bulbs were stored for 5 and 8 months under ambient conditions. After 8 months' storage, bulbs in (1) had the lowest contents of pyruvic acid and total solids. Packing method had no marked effect on weight loss which increased with time, as did the content of total solids. After 5 months' storage, the control bulbs had lower essential oil and pyruvic acid contents than packed bulbs, but after 8 months, the converse was found.
