Operating parameters of animal-powered drive systems (bevel wheel, cable and frictional wheel capstans) were studied and compared, and the suitability of 2 rice hullers (Engelberg and centrifugal rice hullers) and 2 cereal mills (stone disc and steel cone mills) for operation using such a drive system was examined. The bevel wheel capstan proved most suitable for local production. Only the centrifugal huller, with its low power requirement and good hulling quality, was adaptable to a capstan drive. In spite of a higher work requirement, the stone disc mill was preferable to the steel cone mill due to its robustness with regard to impurities in the material to be milled.
