Fruits of apple cultivars Cortland, Gloster, Lobo and Spartan from orchards in central Poland were studied. The mineral contents of fruitlets, leaves and fruits after harvest were determined. Internal ethylene concentration, firmness, SS, starch index and mean fruit weight were also determined. For evaluation of storage ability, fruits were stored at 0-1.5 deg C for 6 months. After storage, weight loss, firmness, SS and incidence of storage disorders were determined. The incidence of bitter pit-like symptoms provoked by infiltration with MgCl was positively correlated with the K:Ca ratio in Cortland and Gloster fruits; the coefficients of determination were 41% and 44%, respectively. Fruits developed from late flowers were considerably smaller than those from earlier flowers. They produced less ethylene and exhibited a lower starch index indicating that fruits developed from flowers of a protracted bloom period should be harvested at least twice. In most of the cultivars under study on significant correlation between the starch index and internal ethylene concentration was found, hence the starch index may be a good criterion for determination of optimum harvest time.
