Quality and storability in relation to fertigation of apple trees cv. Summerred.

Fertigation with a complete liquid NPK fertilizer (Superba S 6.5-1.0-4.7 mikro) at 2 levels (1 and 20/00) was compared with a complete fertilizer (NPK 11-15-18 mikro) supplied to apple trees in the spring with or without drip irrigation. All trees were sprayed 5 times with CaCl2 (72% at 8 kg/ha) during the summer. Fruit weight, size and mineral content were measured at harvest and fruit characteristics (colour, firmness of flesh, sugar content and titratable acidity of juice) were measured both at harvest and after storage for 2 months at 3 deg C and 90-92% RH. Storage quality was measured by % fruit with bitter pit and % rotten fruit. N content increased in fruits with all treatments. Fertigation with the higher level of Superba S caused smaller fruits with less colour. Fruit sugar content decreased and % rotten fruit increased with increasing N content of apples. The number of rotten apples and apples with bitter pit increased with increasing level of fertilizer in the fertigation treatments.
