Influence of pruning on fruit quality and storage potential of apples.

Trials with a system of fruit growing known as the "moderate tree" system are described. Trials were carried out between 1978 and 1984 to change the growing habit of different apple cultivars susceptible to several storage disorders. The cultivars were grafted on M.11, MM.106, M.2, M.26 and M.9 rootstocks and the trees were pruned only in summer (from mid-Aug. to mid-Sep.). Tree vigour changed from vigorous to moderate within one year. The system is regulated by a large number of fruiting shoots per limb or per tree. The trees show an early cessation of shoot growth, the current year's shoot length is greatly reduced and a large amount of short fruiting wood is carried all over the crown. "Moderate trees" produced fruits of improved size, colour and texture. Boskoop apples from "moderate trees" contained higher levels of sugar and titratable acidity and the trees were more resistant to spring frosts than normally pruned trees. Cox's Orange Pippin apples from "moderate trees" showed less storage disorders and improved keeping quality.
