Golden Delicious apples were wound-inoculated with a conidial suspension of P. expansum in solutions with varying concn of CaCl2. The results revealed that the decay intensity, caused by inoculation, decreased with increasing Ca concn. It was shown that the polygalacturonase produced by P. expansum did not readily hydrolyse Ca-pectate and it is concluded that the Ca ions affect the structure of the plant cell walls making them less accessible to cell wall degrading enzymes produced by fungal pathogens.
