Domestication and introduction of marula (Sclerocarya birrea subsp. caffra) as a new crop for the Negev Desert of Israel.

Marula is a large dioecious deciduous tree found in southern Africa, mostly south of the Zambesi river, that produces plum-sized fruits. Local people eat the flesh fresh or use it to prepare juices and alcoholic beverages; the oily seeds are also eaten. Four-year-old trees grown from seed collected in central and southern Botswana at 4 sites with differing climates in the Negev Desert (Besor, Ramat Negev, Qetura and Neot Hakikar) were evaluated for height, trunk circumference, number of main stems/tree and phenology, whilst fruit yield and fruit ripening were assessed a year later. Harvested fruits were stored at 4, 12 and 20 deg C for 14 days and evaluated for 5 quality characters. Fruits were obtained only from trees at Qetura and gave average yields of 26.8 kg and average fruit weight of 28.3 g. Full ripening occurred after abscission, and fruits stored at 20 deg C were riper than those kept at 12 deg C, whilst storage at 4 deg C damaged the fruits.
