Lysis zones were detected in bacterial cultures isolated from diseased Baraka potatoes in storage during a routine screening programme. The bacteria were identified as Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora and Pseudomonas spp. on the basis of their morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics. Bacteriophages F.20-4, causing lysis of E. c. subsp. carotovora, and F.19-1, causing lysis of Pseudomonas, were isolated using the NYGB medium and the NYGA double sandwich procedure. The bacteriophages were studied using pathogenic bacterial strains obtained from potato and EM.
