New postharvest technologies for blueberries.

The use of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) as opposed to controlled atmosphere storage for the transport of blueberry fruits has the advantage of being suitable for smaller quantities of fruits. Factors which must be taken into account when designing MAP include fruit type, cultivar and maturity, respiration rate, volume, temperature and plastic film properties (permeability vs. strength). The results of a trial on the development of MAP for small units of blueberry fruits (pallets) are briefly reported. After 2-3 days, the wrappings had to be punctured to maintain high enough O2 levels and prevent detrimental accumulation of CO2. This system has resulted in successful storage both for controlled release of fruit onto the local Australian market and for storage during shipment to Germany.
