Twenty cherimoya cultivars, planted in 1984 and 1985 at the Kerikeri Research Centre, were evaluated for several seasons. The main criteria evaluated were yield, number of seeds/fruit (less than or equal to 10 seeds/100 g flesh is desirable), fruit shape (symmetry is directly related to effectiveness of pollination), skin smoothness, flavour and susceptibility to disorders such as splitting or russeting. Of the cultivars evaluated, Asca, Ballinger, Canaria, E8 and P43 were disregarded due to poor yields, while Pina, P52 and PK2 produced poor quality fruits. Deliciosa performed well, but the protuberances on its skin made it unattractive and susceptible to postharvest damage. Jete tended to suffer from unattractive flesh blackening. Early cultivars like Bays, McPherson, Smoothey and Spain generally performed well, although the fruits were seedy and prone to splitting. Burtons, Burtons Favorite and Reretai also tended to be quite seedy. The Chilean cultivars Bronceada and Concha Lisa produced good
yields as the trees matured. The Californian cultivar White produced good yields of high quality fruits, the only disadvantages being a tendency to russeting late in the season and the dull appearance of the skin. A further 20 cultivars are currently under evaluation.
