Postharvest citrus fruit abscisic acid and its possible physiological significance.

Free and conjugated ABA concentrations were determined by an indirect ELISA procedure in the mature fruit peel of lemon cultivars Eureka and Lisbon, grapefruit cultivars Red Blush and Marsh White, Washington Navel orange, and tall and dwarf satsuma mandarin. Contents of both free and conjugated ABA differed significantly between the Citrus species. The ratio of conjugated:free ABA varied from 1.29 (lemon cv. Lisbon) to 9.32 (grapefruit cv. Marsh White). The distribution of free and conjugated ABA in lemon showed that the stylar tissues contained the most ABA, with lower concentrations in the stamens and ovaries. It is suggested that changes in ABA concentration reflect its probable involvement in stylar senescence, fruitlet abscission, fruit assimilate accumulation, peel coloration and maturation.
