Strawberry cultivars Cardinal, Chandler and Scott, planted on raised beds, were protected with row covers (Kimberley Farms 20 g/m2) applied on 4 Mar. 1992 and a chemical, FrostGard, applied on 9 and 30 Mar. No frosts occurred after flowering began but the FrostGard treatment appeared to enhance fruit set of Cardinal but reduce it for Chandler and Scott. Frost protection did not affect number or weight of fruits before a hailstorm on 15 May. Fruit number and fruit size were greatest for Cardinal and the smallest fruits were obtained from Scott. Scott had the highest soluble solids content but sometimes ripened irregularly. After storage at 1 deg C and 98% RH for 2 weeks Chandler fruits were softer than Scott or Cardinal.
