Berry drop and fruit removal forces as related with GA3 applications in table grapes.

Application of GA3 to seedless grapes is known to be related to postharvest berry drop. Fruit removal force (FRF) was determined in Chilean Thompson Seedless vines treated with GA3 at 30, 110 or 250 p.p.m. Pedicel and rachis flexibility was also measured. Larger FRF occurred as GA3 concentration increased, resulting in a greater detachment resistance, in spite of increased actual berry drop. A marked reduction in pedicel flexibility was caused by high GA3 concentrations. It is suggested that this loss of flexibility is directly related to the higher propensity to berry drop under the conditions of this study.
