During 1980-92, the monoparticle A-lines, Nm101A and B, possessing monoparticle male sterility, tolerance to rhizomania [beet necrotic yellow vein furovirus], resistance to storage decay and self compatibility genes were developed in Ningxia. The lines were derived from crosses between monoparticle sterile line RK214A (mmSxxzz) and advanced S generations of the widely cultivated monoparticle hybrid, Sudan 3 (Mm), on soils infected with rhizomania. Genetic analysis of the phenotype of Nm101A and B plants during selection and breeding revealed that rhizomania resistance was controlled by a pair of dominant genes. The botanical and biological characteristics of the two lines are described.
