Performance testing of an experimental screw conveyor dryer for roasting cashew nuts.

An experimental screw conveyor drier using a rice husk-fired furnace as a heat source was developed for roasting cashew nuts. The performance of the system was evaluated in terms of kernel quality, optimum operating conditions were determined and the drier was compared to the conventional hot oil bath method. Results showed that whole kernel yield and kernel whiteness depended on the operating conditions of the drier. Max. whole kernel yield and acceptable whiteness were obtained at a temp. of 300 deg C for 2 min exposure time with a feed rate of 12 kg/min.
