Musa spp. were included by IITA as mandate crops in 1987 and the PBIP was created in 1991. Major achievements to date have been the development of germplasm with resistance to black sigatoka [Mycosphaerella fijiensis] and improved systems for sustainable and perennial plantain production. Current research focuses on the Musa genome, developing Musa breeding capability, breeding for durable black sigatoka resistance, developing biotechnological techniques for Musa breeding, postharvest quality investigations for plantains and analysis of genotype x cropping system interactions. Tables provide information on diploid plantain-derived hybrids and banana hybrids selected for further breeding, and tropical plantain and banana hybrids and synthetics developed at IITA.
