Research efforts to reduce the food legume milling losses (10-15%) by proper design and optimization of parameters are reviewed. Hand and power operated machines are described. Of these machines, the abrasive rice polisher, under runner disc sheller and cylinder-concave dehuller may find commercial acceptability. The effect of grain parameters and environmental factors on pulse processing need due attention. Some small capacity units developed for dehusking and splitting the food legumes have been identified for use in developing countries. The details of various aspects are reported along with suggestions for further work.
