This overview of Musa breeding work at IITA concentrates mainly on tetraploid breeding. Tetraploid plantains were produced from diploid x triploid crosses due to the production of unreduced pollen by the triploid parent. Because of a strong dosage effect of black sigatoka (Mycosphaerella fijiensis) genes, higher levels of resistance were obtained in the tetraploids. Tetraploids were also produced from plantain-banana crosses and are currently undergoing trials in Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon. Other areas of research also mentioned are postharvest quality, construction of a genomic map and the application of somatic embryogenesis to genetic engineering.
