Sugarbeet roots desiccate and lose weight when allowed to remain in the field, scattered in small heaps. Losses in root weight were monitored at 24, 48 and 72 h for a sugarbeet crop harvested on 6 dates (2 Mar., 23 Mar., 2 Apr., 14 Apr., 23 Apr. and 14 May, in 1983-84 and 1984-85) and then allowed to lie in small heaps. Sucrose content in the roots was determined every 24 h. Losses increased with delayed harvesting: crops harvested in late-Apr./May lost 24-25% of their sugar, compared with 6-12% in Mar./early Apr. crops. Weight loss increased with the duration of field-lie from 24 to 72 h, with sharp increases (of approx equal to 25%) for the '14 May' crops. Losses in recoverable gross sugar yield were 0.9-1.3 t/ha in the latter part of the season and 0.32-0.15 t/ha for Mar. harvests in 1984-85 and 1983-84, respectively. Advancing the harvest period was most effective for reducing postharvest losses in sugarbeet in North-West Indian regions.
