This paper makes an appraisal of India's achievements, problems and constraints in the light of the New Economic Policy. The problems faced include: low productivity, regional imbalances, distortions in cropping pattern and inappropriate technology. The major challenges facing Indian agriculture are the need to: (1) increase the growth rate in the agricultural sector; (2) correct multi-faceted regional imbalances in the farm sector; (3) create employment opportunities in rural areas; (4) reorganize the age-old system of agricultural marketing; (5) minimize postharvest losses; (6) boost agricultural exports; and (7) strengthen the credit base of the farm sector.
