Microbial contamination of harvested sugarcane was studied using 4 cultivars (CP44, CP65, L62 and L75). Apparent juice purity and the total count of mesophilic aerobic microflora were monitored (every 2 days) during 10 days' field storage of frosted, damaged, not-frosted and undamaged cane in the Gharb region of Morocco. Results for each cultivar are presented on graphs. In all cases, counts progressively increased after the first 2 days while purities decreased at rates which tended to be faster for higher counts, with little difference between cultivars. Sucrose losses and microbial counts showed the order: undamaged < not frosted < frosted < damaged.
