Chamomile [Chamomilla] recutita flowers and their extractable oils are used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, beverage and food industries. Changes in essential oil composition due to differences in harvesting stage and postharvest handling were investigated for 3 genotypes, and the results are tabulated. Flowers harvested at the stage when 50-70% of all the disc florets were open and stored at 2 deg C and 85% RH (rather than at 16 deg and 60% RH) showed the best maintenance of essential oil content, but apigenin content of the oil extracted from flowers after 1 year in storage was higher than for the oil extracted immediately after harvest, and apigetrin 7-glucoside content was lower.
