Technology is part of a process of economic development. Much of present technology is capital-intensive and labour-saving, in agriculture as well as industry. The need for technology is unquestionable, but the type needs to be discussed. This paper addresses the issue of technology in relation to agriculture, employment and the small farmer. Small or marginal farmers on their own cannot have access to farm technology. Organized services in the form of farm inputs, including knowledge and post-harvest technology and skills, have to be provided by governmental or non-government agencies if small and marginal farmers are to survive and have a decent human living.
