Results of a study aimed at assessing the possibility of picking long shelf-life small sized (cocktail) tomato fruits in trusses are reported. In the long shelf-life (nor/+) cultivar BR124, the first fruits on the truss exhibited long shelf-life (25 days) when picked at the stage when fruits 11 and 12 on the truss were red. However, later fruits on the truss did not develop properly. Trusses should therefore be restricted to 11-12 fruits. Fruit quality as assessed by pigment level, taste, electrical conductivity, pH, titratable acidity, total soluble solids (TSS) and reducing sugars of all fruits on the truss was acceptable after 10 days of storage. Shedding of fruits from the truss in this line depended largely on agrotechnology. Good care prevented postharvest shedding. Two other nor/+ cocktail cultivars (BR123 and BR129) failed to exhibit the expected shelf-life and fruit or truss quality. It seems that cocktail tomatoes can successfully be picked in bunches provided the following conditions

are met: (a) the number of fruits per bunch should be restricted so that the first fruits on the truss possess a satisfactory vine storage life (2-3 weeks from initial ripening stage); (b) the last fruits must be well developed and at the right ripening stage. Good preharvest agrotechnological care should be taken to prevent fruits from dropping off the truss during storage.
