Effect of type of cane material and storage period after harvest of sugarcane on the losses in cane weight and juice quality.

20 canes each from cultivars Co.T.8201 and Co.7219 were harvested during Mar. in 1988 and 1989; in each batch, 10 whole canes and 10 cut into 3 bits were stored in the open for 3 days, with analysis after 0, 1, 2 and 3 days for cane weight, juice recovery (% cane), juice purity, sucrose % juice and CCS (calculated commercial cane sugar yield % cane). The last 3 variables were higher in Co.T.8201 than in Co.7219; they increased in the 1st day (except for whole Co.T.8201 juice purity in 1989) and then decreased. Decreases in all variables were greater in cane bits than in whole canes.
