Redgold and Fantasia nectarines harvested in 1992 at export maturity from Central Otago, were forced-air heated to surface temperatures ranging from 38 deg to 46 deg C for 12 to 36 h depending on the temperature. For comparative purposes, a mathematical model was used to express all heat treatments as hour-equivalents at 42 deg . Following heat treatment, fruits were stored at 0 deg for 3 weeks, held at 20 deg for 5 days and then assessed for quality. The results suggest that both Redgold and Fantasia fruits can tolerate up to 10 hour-equivalents at 42 deg with little or no damage. This is within the treatment range which will control thrips on nectarines. Treatment for a greater number of hour-equivalents at 42 deg resulted in an increase in internal browning, scald and mealiness in stored fruits.
