Postharvest bactericide treatments against Vibrio cholerae in lettuce (Lactuca sativa).

ABSTRACT

The effect of bactericidal solutions on postharvest quality of lettuce and V. cholerae control was evaluated. Lettuce was dipped in chlorine at 0, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 p.p.m. and Kilol at 1000 p.p.m. for 1, 4, 7 and 10 min. Postharvest quality was not affected by any of the treatments. Ten minute dips in chlorine (20 p.p.m.) or Kilol (1000 p.p.m.) resulted in 99% mortality of V. cholerae inoculated on lettuce at 108 bacteria/g of leaf tissue. When the bacterium was inoculated at 106 bacteria/g, both bactericidal treatments resulted in 99.99% mortality of V. cholerae.
