Effect of fruit age and the duration of the postharvest period on seed quality in the cucumber cultivar Rubi.

ABSTRACT

Fruits picked 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 or 45 days after anthesis (DAA) were held for 0, 5, 10 or 15 days and then the seeds were extracted. Seed germination and vigour increased as fruit picking was delayed from 15 to 40 days; there was no added advantage with a further delay. Increasing the postharvest holding period had a beneficial effect on seed quality, especially in the young fruits picked 20-30 DAA. Fruits picked 25, 30 and 35 DAA and held for 10-15 days produced seeds of equally good quality as those from fruits picked 40-45 DAA (without a postharvest holding period).
