Extension and training in post-harvest practices for farmers, with particular reference to Africa.

ABSTRACT

It is stated that in Africa, over 70% of food-grains do not leave the farm as they are consumed by farmers and their families. National food security, therefore, depends heavily on safe conservation of grain at the farm stage. Extension and farmer training activities concentrate on the crop production cycle, with minimal attention being given to postharvest activities at the smallholder level. With the current significant shift towards market liberalization and reduction in government-controlled food storage, it is vital that extension services provide increased postharvest support to all grain producers. Various approaches to improve postharvest training and extension are discussed and the strengthening of these activities at smallholder level is urged. Experiences with the implementation of a specialized postharvest extension campaign against Prostephanus truncatus in Tanzania are described.
