Integrated management of postharvest fruit quality.

ABSTRACT

Results of studies on apples aimed at introducing and developing the concepts of integrated postharvest control and quality management are presented. Initial low oxygen stress and ultra low oxygen (ULO) storage reduced scald in apple cultivars Granny Smith and Topred. Diphenylamine application using thermofogging and heat treatment at 36 deg C for 4 days prior to cold storage prevented scald development. The distribution of fungal populations causing postharvest decay varied according to the position of the fruit on the tree and in the orchard. Disinfection of the washing water reduced surface infection of Penicillium and Mucor but recontamination resulted in high counts on surfaces of packed fruits. It is suggested that control of physiological and pathogenic disorders should start in the orchard and continue through to the packhouse providing a holistic approach to the factors affecting fruit quality.
