ABSTRACT
Two types of rot symptoms were observed on affected Golden Delicious apples (both produced in Taiwan and imported) in markets in Taichung, Taiwan in Jan. 1994. A. alternata was consistently isolated from apples with round, depressed lesions and spongy rot tissues, while S. [Pleospora] herbarum was isolated from apples with light-dark brown or black lesions around the stem end. The pathogenicity of both fungi was confirmed. The effect of temp. and culture medium on the growth of the 2 species was investigated. A. alternata grew fastest on CA and OMA media, while P. herbarum grew best on V-8A. Opt. temp. for mycelial growth were 24-28 deg C and 16-24 deg for A. alternata and P. herbarum, respectively, while conidial gemination was opt. at 24-32 deg and 16-28 deg . This is the first report of postharvest fruit rot of Golden Delicious apples caused by A. alternata and P. herbarum in Taiwan.
