ABSTRACT
An assessment is made of the impact of onion and garlic production and postharvest technology developed by the Indian National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation (NHRDF). Details are given of the number of demonstrations, farmers meetings, field days and exhibitions arranged per year over the period 1977/78-1992/93 and of the extent of adoption by farmers in different areas. Surveys were conducted in selected villages to assess the effect of NHRDF extension activities on area, production and yield. Due to effective technology transfer through the various methods of extension education, the area, production, productivity and per caput availability of onion and garlic have improved considerably. Adoption of postharvest management technology promoted through the extension activities reduced microbial spoilage in onions during storage.
