ABSTRACT
To solve the labour shortage and to improve the working environment, automation of rice postharvest systems, including weighing, drying, handling, storage, aeration, husking, polishing and packing, has been promoted since 1990 under Taiwan government policy. Between 1990 and 1993, 3 systems were set up by the farmers' associations of Hsin-Ying, Ta-Chia and Hou-Long. Monitoring devices were introduced on rice handling, storage and processing equipment, connected to a programmable logic controller (PLC) and then to a personal computer in the control room. A simulation of rice postharvest handling, useful for testing sensors and in training programmes is introduced.
