ABSTRACT
Research on storage of rambutans, which rapidly deteriorate after harvest unless proper handling techniques are employed, is discussed. Appearance can be maintained if moisture loss (largely from the spinterns) is minimized (95% RH) and the fruits are refrigerated (7.5-12.5 deg C, depending on cultivar). Postharvest pulp quality and pathogen development generally are not problems under refrigeration until after fruits have become visually unacceptable. Under the above storage conditions, rambutans have a shelf life of approx equal to 10-16 days. Other techniques for extending shelf life include enhanced carbon dioxide atmospheres which can extend shelf life to 18-20 days.
