Effects of postharvest handling and cultivars on keeping quality of onions (Allium cepa L.) in storage.

ABSTRACT

The effect of postharvest handling on storage of 5 onion cultivars (Alsogodi, Bolero, Dorata di Parma, Makoi and Volszka) was evaluated over a 5-year period in trials carried out in Hungary and the Netherlands. Early harvesting (before 100% of the tops have fallen) improved the storability of onions which more than compensated for the loss in yield. Cutting off the tops before they were completely dry reduced the number of healthy bulbs in storage. Artificial drying in heated air was beneficial only if the bulbs had become wet during field curing. Scales played a determining role in storability and in maintaining dormancy. Bulbs remained dormant longest when stored at low (5 deg C) or high (25 deg ) temperatures. There were considerable differences in cultivars but the ranking remained the same for each treatment.
