Effect of postharvest treatments on the storage life of avocado pear (Persea americana, Mill.).

ABSTRACT

Postharvest treatment with wax, fungicides and KMnO4, and polyethylene and paper bag packaging were studied to extend the shelf life of avocados, under refrigeration and at ambient temp. At ambient temp. fruit ripened within 6 d while those in polyethylene bags at 10 deg C remained healthy for 21 d. Fruit at ambient temp. (28-30 deg ) and at 10 deg did not store well in paper bags. Fruit treated with Benlate [benomyl], captan and KMnO4 remained fresh at 10 deg . The different conditions and packaging materials affected the germination percentage, growth and seedling vigour.
