ABSTRACT
With shortages of unskilled labour, increasing labour costs, and a requirement to improve quality, Thai primary producers, packers and exporters are investing in packing shed machinery to improve returns. Examples from existing packing sheds in Thailand and Australia in comparison with traditional methods of handling fruit in Thailand justify investment in equipment in both the mango and citrus industries in Thailand based on minimal throughputs. Benefits are shown to be savings in labour and reduction of postharvest losses. This is in addition to other benefits that include easier supervision and higher possible throughputs.
