ABSTRACT
The factors and mechanisms involved in the treatment of apples and potatoes with calcium to reduce postharvest decay caused by Penicillium expansum and Erwinia carotovora pv. atroseptica, respectively, are summarised. Calcium treatment methods, factors involved in calcium uptake, the relationship of calcium and controlled-atmosphere storage to decay development, the role of calcium in reducing decay and the practical considerations of this method of control are discussed. This paper was presented at a colloquium on management of postharvest disease resistance in horticultural crops held in Pennsylvania, USA in Jul., 1991.
