ABSTRACT
South Florida has become an important trading and distribution centre for tropical fruits and vegetables in the USA. Production of tropical crops in S. Florida increases each year, while the seaports of Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach and the several international airports in the area provide good services for importers. Losses during handling and marketing of tropical produce are often high, particularly for imported goods, with postharvest losses sometimes exceeding 50%. This is often due to inadequate equipment or technology and long marketing chains. Postharvest storage and handling requirements and storage problems are discussed for crops produced in S. Florida (avocados, Tahiti limes [Citrus latifolia], mangoes, carambolas, Litchi, longans, passion fruits, atemoyas and other tropical fruits and vegetables) and for imported crops (mangoes, pawpaws and tropical vegetables).
