ABSTRACT
The problem of effective utilization of vegetable storage capacity in the Ukraine is addressed. As regards horticultural products, there are 25 buildings with mechanical cooling, with a capacity of 30 kt; there are a further 40 roofed buildings with a capacity of 45 kt. Over the last 2 years the annual horticultural production on large farms was approx equal to 80 kt, including 30 kt vegetables. 60-65 kt was sold fresh, including 25 kt vegetables. On small farms, 50 kt fruit was grown and 60 kt vegetables. Most of this was sold fresh. It was concluded that utilization of cold-storage facilities was less than or equal to 15-20%. It is thought likely that most of the small household farms will specialize in horticulture in the future, despite the lack of processing facilities and storage capacity. Selling products fresh is difficult because of the lack of fuel for transport to markets. The integration of large and small farms would help to solve the problem of storage facilities, and increase the
amount of produce sold fresh.
