Relative humidity in cool stores: measurement, control and influence of discrete factors.

ABSTRACT

Commercial instruments for measuring RH are unreliable. The challenge of the manufacturers is to accurately measure variations in RH of 1%, which represents approx. 5mg water per m3 air at 0 deg C. Hair or synthetic-fibre hygrometers may reach an accuracy of plus or minus 3% if maintained properly and calibrated approx. every 3 months. The precision of electronic capacitive or electrolytic sensors is comparable to that of hair hygrometers. However, electrolytic sensors are sensitive to water contamination. constructional factors that affect the efficiency of cool stores are discussed.
