ABSTRACT
The Turkish economy is based on the agricultural economy. The agricultural sector comprises 18% of GNP, 6% of imports and 18% of exports. Over 40% of the Turkish population live in rural areas, with many dependent on the sector for employment. About 5 million people work in the horticultural sector alone. Both processed and unprocessed products have an important share of exports.
