Reduction of chilling injury by methyl jasmonate.

ABSTRACT

Zucchini squash (Cucurbita pepo) fruits were treated by pressure infiltration with 10-3 or 5 x 10-4 M methyl jasmonate before storing at 5 deg C. Fruits were removed daily and kept at 20 deg for 3 days before assessing chilling injury. Untreated fruits showed signs of chilling injury after day 4 of storage but both concentrations of methyl jasmonate delayed symptoms of chilling injury until day 8. Analysis of polyamines showed that treated fruits maintained higher levels of spermine and spermidine which have been implicated in the reduction of lipid peroxidation.
