ABSTRACT
The Ca formulations CaEDTA and Nutrical were applied to rabbiteye blueberry (Vaccinium ashei), cv. Tifblue, bushes at rates of 5818 mg/bush (single spray) and 8000 p.p.m./bush (3 sprays), respectively, to give an overall application of 10 000 p.p.m. Ca. Paclobutrazol was given as a soil drench at a rate of 1 g a. i./bush. Both Ca formulations and paclobutrazol produced significantly firmer berries at harvest and this firmness was markedly maintained after 2 weeks' storage compared with the control, thus extending shelf life. There was no correlation, however, between Ca content and firmness. TSS decreased during storage and was greatest in the control fruits while total acidity was higher in Ca-treated fruits compared with paclobutrazol-treated fruits and the control fruits. Trace amounts of ethylene were found in the control fruits after 2 weeks' storage but none could be detected in the treated fruits.
