ABSTRACT
Ethylene production profiles during fruit development in raspberries, blackberries and raspberry x blackberry hybrids showed considerable differences. Ethylene production increased in all the raspberries and hybrids although the stage at which this occurred varied. In some of the blackberries there was no increase in ethylene production. Exogenous ethylene accelerated ripening and abscission of those fruits where endogenous ethylene was not saturating. The role of ethylene in ripening, abscission, quality and harvesting is discussed.
