Research on the effects of silver thiosulphate + sucrose pretreatment on the cold storage period and post storage vase life of cut flowers of carnation cv. Astor harvested at different maturities.

ABSTRACT

Flowers were harvested at 4 maturity stages viz. (1) tight bud, (2) cross, (3) paintbrush and (4) fully open. Half of the samples were held in 550 mg silver thiosulfate (STS)/litre + 100 g sucrose for 20 h. Treated and non-treated flowers were then stored in plastic bags at 0-0.5 deg C and vase life was subsequently evaluated at 17-22 deg . STS treatment had no effect on storage life which averaged approx. 60 days for treated and non-treated flowers. However, storage life was significantly affected by harvest maturity and it declined as harvest maturity advanced. STS treatment increased vase life but cold storage decreased it. Vase life decreased as harvest maturity advanced. The number of days to bud opening decreased as harvest maturity advanced and was reduced by STS treatment. STS treatment increased flower diameter.
