ABSTRACT
Fruits were dipped in 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% Semperfresh solution [sucrose esters of fatty acids] and stored for 150 days at 0 deg C and 90-95% RH. Firmness was better and titratable acidity was higher after storage in treated fruits than in untreated fruits. At the end of storage, fruit loss due to senescence and superficial scald was >75% in controls compared with 35.9, 16.3 and 0.7% in fruits treated with 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% Semperfresh, respectively. The change in skin colour from green to yellow was also delayed. Treated Starkspur Golden Delicious fruits had less weight loss and the change in skin colour from green to yellow was delayed compared with the controls. Semperfresh treatment increased the shelf-life of apple fruits by 7-10 days.
