ABSTRACT
Fruits from 3 tomato hybrids, Pioneer 5692 F1 (normal ripening), Pioneer 6353 F1 (ripening inhibitor, rin) and Pioneer 4127 F1 (non-ripening, nor), were picked at mature green and pink stages of maturity and stored at 10 deg C and 85-90% RH or picked when red and stored at 20 deg to assess shelf-life. Quality parameters were measured at intervals during storage. The heaviest fruits with the lowest loss of firmness came from the normal ripening hybrid. Rin fruits had the firmest fruits over all the treatments and had the highest titratable acidity but fruits from this hybrid had the lowest TSS. Nor fruits had the best shelf-life. Rin fruits were the most suitable for cold storage. Red fruits of normal, rin and nor hybrids had a shelf-life of 2, 4 and 6 days, respectively, whereas pink fruits of the same hybrids had a shelf-life of 8, 12 and 16 days, respectively. Green and pink fruits of normal and rin types could be cold-stored for up to 30 days.
